Frequently Asked Questions

  • + How do you pronounce Herstmonceux?

As with most place names there is a 'correct' pronunciation amongst local people and Herstmonceux is no exception.

Herst is the Saxon name for a wooded hill, and the manor is mentioned in the Domesday Book as being part of the land belonging to the Count of Eu.

In 1131 the Count's grandson transferred the manor to Drogo de Monceux, (great grandson of William the Conqueror) who married Idonea de Monceux. Their son was known as Walleran de Herst Monceux.

To answer the question 'How do you pronounce Herstmonceux?'

    • Herst as in 'first'
    • Mon as in 'monsoon'
    • Ceux as in 'zoo'

    'Hirstmonzoo'

  • + I’ve had a star named after me! Can I see it through a telescope?

This is always a difficult question.

It very much depends on where the star is and how bright it is. Many of the stars are far too faint and distant making it extremely difficult to pinpoint.

To avoid disappointment therefore we do not usually offer to locate such stars with our telescopes.

Do you offer a "star naming" service?

    No we do not.

Some commercial enterprises do say that they offer such a service and will charge a fee for it. However such "names" have no formal or official validity whatsoever.

This is an excerpt from the International Astronomical Unions (IAU) website:  As an international scientific organization, the IAU dissociates itself entirely from the commercial practice of "selling" fictitious star names or "real estate" on other planets or moons in the Solar System. Accordingly, the IAU maintains no list of the (several competing) enterprises in this business in individual countries of the world. For further information please visit the IAU website www.iau.org/public/buying_star_names/

  • + Has the Hubble telescope made earthbound telescopes redundant?

    Not at all.

Space telescopes fulfil a very important role but they cannot be made as large as ground based telescopes due to weight and the cost of getting them into space.

The wider the diameter of a telescope the better light gathering ability it has and the more detail it can resolve.

At the moment the largest ground based telescope is the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GranTeCan or GTC). It is a 10.4 m (410 in) reflecting telescope located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on the island of La Palma, in the Canaries, Spain. It is the world's largest single-aperture optical telescope.

Although atmospheric disturbance is not a problem encountered by space telescopes, many ground based telescopes do have a problem and atmospheric disturbance can distort the image.  However, adaptive optics used with large ground based telescopes can compensate for distortion caused by the atmosphere.

  • + Who uses the telescopes at Herstmonceux now?

While the telescopes are not being used scientifically for research purposes they are open to the public on our open evenings which are usually held during the Autumn, Winter and Spring with one or two exceptions in the summer.

They are also open on our special themed evening events which take place throughout the year.

You can also hire the centre for private evening group visits when you may get the opportunity to use the telescopes (weather permitting).

Twilight educational visits or scouting and guiding group visits can also be arranged.

  • + Can we look through the telescopes during the day?

No, because if you catch the Sun it will blind you.....

Also daylight swamps the light coming from celestial objects making them almost impossible to see.

  • + Is The Centre on the meridian line?

Not quite, Herstmonceux is 0.320 E of the Greenwich Meridian.

  • + Can we visit the Isaac Newton dome?

No. This is an empty building and does not have any public access.

  • + Does science centre admission price include admission to the Gardens & Grounds of Herstmonceux Castle?

The science centre is located within the estate of Herstmonceux Castle https://herstmonceux-castle.com/ but is a separate business.

We are currently unable to offer combined entry tickets to both attractions.

  • + Can we use the catering/ toilet facilities without paying an admission price?

We will always help our visitors wherever possible, but we cannot permit entry without a valid admission ticket.

  • + Is the science centre suitable for young children?

YES The centre is suitable for all!

We do not charge for children age 0 to 3, and children cannot be admitted unless accompanied by an adult.

Due to the nature of the site all visitors should take care of the ramps /steps / pond etc and children under 16 years of age must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

  • + Do you offer concession admission prices?

As an independent, educational charity visitor admissions are our main source of income.

We will always admit carers free of charge to a maximum 1-1 ratio (Blue Badge, Benefit Award Letter or similar required).  We also offer family and group rate tickets but are unable to offer discounts for students or unemployed.

Essential carers are required to pre-book using our online booking system (PayPal required) and choose the Carers button. Alternatively you can ring in advance to check availability and provide payment details.

We aim to open The Launch Box catering unit (fries, hot dogs, burgers) and The Cafe (drinks, snacks, ice creams etc.), subject to visitor bookings and employee availability.

  • + What safety measures have you put in place?

When you visit you will see many safety measures that were put in place during 2020.

We have voluntarily decided to keep many of these measures in place: the safety and wellbeing of our visitors, employees and volunteers continues to be an absolute priority.

Please respect rules and guidelines for your own protection and the safety of others.

If any visitors refuse to follow guidelines or are acting in a manner which causes concern to others they will be approached by management. OSC reserves the right to ask visitors to leave, without reimbursing entry fee. Abuse of any kind towards employees or other visitors will not be tolerated.

  • + What if I'm feeling unwell?

Please do not visit The Observatory Science Centre if you’re feeling unwell with the recognised symptons of Covid 19.

If you become unwell in any way whilst on site please speak to us immediately so that we can assist you.

Our employees and volunteers will not come to site if they are feeling unwell and are regularly testing for Covid-19.

  • + Do I need to wear a face covering?

It is no longer mandatory to wear a face covering.

However you will see that some visitors and members of our team are choosing to wear them to protect others and themselves.

We recommend that you wear a face covering in enclosed spaces, unless you are exempt.

We hope that everyone will be respectful of other visitors, employees and volunteers as we all adjust to Government guidelines. Please speak to us if you have any concerns or questions.

Please cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue: if no tissue is available, use your elbow.

  • + I've changed my plans: can I have a refund on admission / event tickets?

  • + We are a school group: what year groups do you cover?

We offer a wide range of presentations covering a substantial amount of the curriculum in science from reception through to A-level.

  • + Is it relevant to the national curriculum?

As an interactive experience, session content is flexible and presentations can be geared towards specific learning objectives and curriculum targets. As a general idea, we can cover:

    Key Stage 1

    Working Scientifically

    • asking simple questions and recognising that they can be answered in different ways
    • identifying and classifying
    • using their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions

    Seasonal Changes

    • observe changes across the 4 seasons
    • observe and describe weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies

    Key Stage Lower 2

    Working Scientifically

    • using straightforward scientific evidence to answer questions or to support their findings.
      Light
    • recognise that they need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light
    • notice that light is reflected from surfaces
    • recognise that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect their eyes
    • recognise that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object
    • find patterns in the way that the size of shadows change

    States of matter

    • compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases

    Key Stage Upper 2
    Earth and Space

    • describe the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the sun in the solar system
    • describe the movement of the moon relative to the Earth
    • describe the sun, Earth and moon as approximately spherical bodies
    • use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky

    Forces

    • explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object
    • identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces

    Light

    • use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye
    • explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes
    • use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them

    Key Stage 3

    Forces

    • non-contact forces: gravity forces acting at a distance on Earth and in space, forces between magnets, and forces due to static electricity
    • forces being needed to cause objects to stop or start moving, or to change their speed or direction of motion (qualitative only)

    Light

    • light waves travelling through a vacuum; speed of light
      Space
    • gravity force, weight = mass x gravitational field strength (g), on Earth g=10 N/kg, different on other planets and stars; gravity forces between Earth and Moon, and between Earth and sun (qualitative only)
    • our sun as a star, other stars in our galaxy, other galaxies
    • the seasons and the Earth’s tilt, day length at different times of year, in different hemispheres
    • the light year as a unit of astronomical distance

    Key Stage 4

    Forces and Motion

    • acceleration caused by forces; Newton’s First Law
    • weight and gravitational field strength

    Waves

    • electromagnetic waves, velocity in vacuum; waves transferring energy; wavelengths and frequencies from radio to gamma-rays
    • uses in the radio, microwave, infra-red, visible, ultra-violet, X-ray and gamma-ray regions, hazardous effects on bodily tissues

    Space physics

    • the main features of the solar system
    • Life cycle of a star
    • Orbital motion, natural and artificial satellites
    • Red-shift
  • + How long does each show last?

Each presentation lasts approx. 30 – 45 minutes, depending on your schedule.

The whole experience will include pre-presentation points, entry / exit, and questions.

  • + Where can you set up the dome?

The dome can be set up in any indoor venue space such as your hall or gym, and taken down at lunchtime if required. Please ensure your timetable gives sufficient time for disinfecting protocols.

Just bring ID proof of status and show this on arrival and we will ask you to leave your school details at our reception. If you wish to speak with someone about any aspect of an Educational Visit please contact us in advance to make an appointment, or ask at reception to check if anyone is available.

If you visit with friends or family you will be asked to pay for their admission... but you are welcome to stay all day!

We strive to work in partnership with you to continue to offer high quality 'I can do' learning experiences that meet all needs and expectations, whilst offering exceptional value for money.

  • + When are you open for pre-booked school groups?

You can visit from the last week of January to the first week of December for day or twilight visits.

  • + How many pupils / adults can we bring?

You can bring up to 200 pre-booked pupils at one time.

Accompanying, supervising adults are ALL admitted free of charge and are responsible for their group at all times.

  • + How will the day be structured?

We create a bespoke, structured timetable for your visit which we aim to supply in advance of your visit.

The timetable is based on the arrival / departure times you provide and facilitates the movement of groups of pupils to thir activities and different areas of the site.

On your confirmation documentation, we will have asked you to divide the pupils into a number of groups.

During our 'welcome' we will explain where you should meet The Centre team for your activities.

Your bespoke timetable is prepared by us and gives times for your pre-booked workshop / show / tour etc. In-between these activities your group will be timetabled for exhibit areas, lunch and gift shop.

The indoor corridor of exhibits contains 5 themed exhibition galleries which can be explored in any order. Each group leader should keep their children together to explore one exhibition area at a time, rather than spread out along the corridor.

Each group will also be allocated time to the outdoor exhibit areas of Discovery Park and Water Park (weather permitting).

  • + How long should we schedule for a visit?

Allowing for travelling time, a visit to us will fill your normal school day.
Ideally you should aim for a minimum of 3 hours but your booked activities will be timetabled to fit within the times you have told us you can be on site.
Groups are welcome morning, afternoon or evening.

  • + Do we have to pay for parking?

We have FREE parking for all vehicles.

Ramped step-free access is at the rear of the main centre building, with 4 parking bays for cars / minibuses. This area is not accessible for coaches.

Cars & Minibuses: Grass field (mown) immediately adjacent to The Centre.

Coaches: Designated hard standing area located a short walk 100 metres (approx.) from our reception. Coaches are NOT permitted to drive right up to our reception.

We offer FREE admission for your coach driver, plus a FREE cup of tea / coffee from the Cafe.

Please advise your driver that NO coach is permitted to reverse whilst children are standing in the coach park. ALL children must remain seated until your vehicle has parked and is stationary.

  • + Who will help us on the day?

We have a dedicated team of emploees and volunteers who will lead your booked workshop / tour / science show etc. All have a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Certificate and many are registered STEM Ambassadors.

ALL employees and volunteers wear uniform (purple) and / or name badge.

On arrival we meet you at outside our entrance reception. In fair weather we give a short 'Welcome & Safety' introduction before you enter the site. In wet weather we move straight to the school base: usually the large white geodesic dome or marquee.

"Please thank all the staff who were involved on the day for their support and for being so lovely with the children."

"The staff clearly enjoy interacting with the children - which isn't always the case on school trips!"

"The staff were really lovely and helpful."

  • + Do you have Risk Assessments?

Risk Assessments for the site, exhibits, activities etc. all available to download from this website.

The Observatory Science Centre operates in an historic site and visitors must take care at all times. Teachers and accompanying adults are responsible for the appropriate behaviour of their pupils at all times.

    Fire Safety
In the event of an evacuation of the building everyone assembles in the outdoor Discovery Park. If you are involved in a workshop, tour or similar, you will be directed by the science centre team. The teacher in charge of your visit will be expected to take a register to confirm all members of their group are accounted for.

    First Aid
The first aid room is located on the ground floor along the exhibits corridor. All visiting schools bring their own First Aider but if an incident or accident does occur it must be reported to us and one of our Emergency Aiders will assist you.

  • + Is the science centre suitable for pupils with additional needs??

Groups of all ages are welcome and carers are admitted FREE of charge 1-1 ratio.

At the time of booking please discuss individual needs and access requirements, special facilities, or if additional carers are required to accompany the group.

The multi-sensory nature of many of the interactive exhibits makes them ideal for all ability levels.

Workshops, Telescope Tours and Science Shows can be adjusted for each group.

This is an historic site but the majority is wheelchair accessible.

Parking for cars / minibus and ramped, step-free access is at the rear of the main building.

The access toilet is located on the ground floor and includes height adjustable changing bed and hoist.

  • + Where can we leave our property and eat lunch etc.?

Property can be left in the geodesic dome / marquee and this is the same space for you to eat your lunch. It is not possible to lock these areas and they are shared with other groups.

Science Projects Ltd cannot accept any responsibility for loss or damage to personal items.

There is a patio and decked area outside the marquee which can be used for picnics in good weather: please note, our Risk Assessment does not permit school groups to sit near the pond for lunch.

The Cafe will be open for purchases but food / drink cannot be consumed in the exhibit corridor nor telescope domes etc.

  • + What should we wear?

Most schools choose for their pupils to wear school uniform, but this is not essential.

Pupils and adults should dress according to the weather conditions as the site comprises several buildings / domes and all doors are open to maintain airflow.

You will be walking outside to access different areas.

The buildings will be cold so it is advisable to wear layers and definitely coats / sturdy footwear during cold / wet months. We keep outdoor exhibits operational as long as it is safe to do so.

If you have booked a Twilight visit you should definitely wear warm layers.

  • + Do you have a Gift Shop?

Our Gift Shop is located within the entrance reception: every purchase helps to support our charity.

There is a great range of science and astronomy related gifts, pocket money toys and souvenirs.

Items are available from just 25 pence and this is a great opportunity for pupils to shop with 'real money' and practice their maths.

If pupils bring pocket money, small groups will be allocated a time to visit the shop as we cannot accommodate everyone at one time. Pupils must always be accompanied by their supervising adults.

You can also pre-order Goody Bags from £4.50: options can be discussed with the Shop Manager.

Teachers: Please let us know in advance if you would like to purchase in bulk for prizes or classroom resources etc.

  • + Do you have a Cafe?

The Café will be open serving hot / cold drinks and light snacks.

Purchases cannot be consumed in the exhibit corridor nor telescope domes etc.

We can assist with 'packed' lunches for your group to save bringing them from school / residential sites etc. and we can cater for dietary requirements. Please discuss at the time of booking. We are adept at preparing emergency rations on the day should packed lunches have been forgotten!

As well as the Cafe we operate a catering unit: 'The Launch Box' serving fries, hot dogs, burgers etc.

If you would like students to make purchases from The Cafe or The Launch Box, please discuss with us beforehand.

Water bottles can be refilled in the Cafe.
