Gift Aid FAQs

What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is one of the simplest and most effective ways of giving to a charity. For every £ you give to support the charity, they receive an extra 25 pence from the Inland Revenue.

Who can donate in this way?
You have to be a UK tax payer and must be resident in the UK.
For every £1 you donate in a financial year, you must have paid 28 pence in income or capital gains tax in the same financial year.

What if I am a higher rate taxpayer?
If you declare the donation on your tax return, you can claim a rebate based on the difference between the higher rate and the basic rate when you fill in your self assessment form.  Your admission receipt will clearly show that you have made a Gift Aid payment.

If I give you my address details will I receive junk mail?
No, we will not pass your details to anyone.

Why do I have to makea 10% donation in addition to the Admission Price?
The law changed in April 2006 and from then visitors could no longer just pay a straight Admission Price and expect to call it a donation - it was required that you make a true donation to the charity, which was set at 10%. HM Revenue & Customs then permits the charity to claim back the tax on the whole amount - admission plus 10% donation.

Can I donate more than 10%?
Of course! All charities will be happy to Gift Aid any amount that you donate.

What do I have to do?
Just complete a simple Gift Aid Declaration Form.  The forms are available at our reception desk, or you can download one and bring it with you.
You complete this yourself to confirm that you want the charity to reclaim the tax you have already paid on the donation.

Who will have access to this information?
Only Science Projects Ltd and the Inland Revenue. The information will never be passed to anyone else.

Full details of Gift Aid are available on the HMRC website.
