Christmas Events

Following on from the success of 2017 we will once again be hosting a corporate 'Murder Mystery' - a fabulous opportunity for an alternative company Christmas outing.

We are also continuing to host our 'Christmas Songs by Starlight' starting in the late afternoon and going through to the early evening when it is dark enough to hopefully view through the telescopes (weather permitting).

Christmas Round the Moon

Saturday 8th December

To celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of Apollo 8 we are making this Open Evening a little more special

Nearly fifty years ago on December 21st 1968 Apollo 8 launched for the Moon taking about 3 days to get there. This was the first journey by homo sapiens away from the region of our home planet. Borman, Lovell and Anders orbited the Moon for 20 hours surveying the surface and testing the systems that would later enable Apollo 11 to land before safe return to Earth.

This talk explains how NASA did it. The technologies they invented. How they launched and crossed the gap between the Earth and Moon. How they knew where they were as they travelled in space. The problems that they had to solve on their journey. This was all done with 38 kilobytes of memory in their computer - hardly enough for a modern machine to store the famous Earth rise picture that they took as they came around from the dark side.

The talk will be presented by Robin Mobbs is a Lead Educator for the National Space Academy

Time: Gates open at 6.30pm and close at 11pm. The  talk will take place at 7.30pm
Cost: Normal admission price and no advance booking necessary
